Open fonts

As time permits, I’ll be converting all* my fonts to OpenType and re-releasing them over the next however-long-it-takes. I will make the source files available as FontForge native files and everything will be covered by the Open Font License (OFL).

There should be several benefits:
  • accessible source files that can be edited by anyone prepared to use FontForge, which is open source in its own right
  • the OpenType format, although subject to some considerable amount of strangeness, is basically a Good Thing and a lot closer to being cross-platform than anything else
  • the OFL states my intention to let anybody fiddle about with the fonts – as long as, if they distribute what they’ve done, they allow everyone else to keep fiddling about with that.
I’ve got a lot of learning to do before anything useful emerges. But don’t despair!

*All the ones that seem, on inspection, to merit a second look. Starting with Puritan.

Be sure to submit them to the Open Font Library!

Hello Ben,

I am very impressed with the Puritan 2.0 font. I found it over at the Open Font Library, and since I'm designing a logo for an open source application, this seems to me like a perfect choice in lettering!

I will keep you posted on how the design comes along, and if there's something to check out on-line (the website should be up in the coming month) I will provide you with a link.

Thanks for the great work on Puritan, I am impressed by the high quality of the font!

Mark.
